MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s energy generation saw an increase of 4.3% year-on-year during the initial eight months of 2026. Total electricity output reached 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours, up from 35,935.3 GWh in the same timeframe of 2025. This rise of roughly 1,546.5 GWh was reflected in preliminary data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information, which indicated growth across multiple governorates. August’s electricity production hit 5,743.9 GWh, an increase from July’s 5,676.9 GWh. Overall, national electricity output remained above the levels recorded in 2025.

Muscat experienced the most significant surge, with electricity generation rising by 204.8% compared to the previous year. Al Dakhiliyah followed with a growth of 44.1%, while Al Wusta saw an 8.4% increase. Regions including North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah collectively recorded a 5.5% rise, with Dhofar reporting a 4.6% gain during the same period. The regional data revealed considerable variation in electricity growth, with several governorates registering higher outputs during the reporting period.
In contrast, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah displayed differing trends, with combined electricity production in these governorates decreasing by 16.4% from the same period in 2025. Musandam’s output stood at 376.0 GWh, remaining essentially unchanged from the previous year. The regional figures overall showed increases in most areas covered by the national data. By the end of August, Oman’s total electricity generation continued to surpass 2025 levels. These figures cover the period from January through August 2026.
Electricity production shows growth across Oman
Net electricity generation also experienced an uptick during the January to August window. It increased by 4.6%, reaching 36,463.9 GWh from 34,871.8 GWh in the previous year. This measure accounts for purchases made by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat led the net growth with a 204.4% increase, followed by Al Dakhiliyah at 44.2%, while Al Wusta and Dhofar grew by 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. The overall national increase was approximately 1,592.1 GWh.
Combined net electricity production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah rose by 5.4%, whereas North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a decline of 16.6%. Musandam’s net output stood at 368.0 GWh, with an annual change rate of 0.0%. Overall, Oman’s net electricity generation remained above the levels of 2025. The regional patterns largely echoed the total output movements, with several governorates recording increases in net production during the first eight months.
Water output declines through August 2026
During the same period, Oman’s water production decreased. Total water output dropped by 3.5% to 330.65 million cubic metres from roughly 342.71 million in the previous year. Muscat’s water production declined by 6.2%, reaching approximately 128.07 million cubic metres compared to about 136.57 million during the same months of 2025. Other governorates experienced a 3.4% decrease, producing around 149.90 million cubic metres, down from roughly 155.19 million cubic metres a year earlier.
Dhofar bucked the national trend, recording higher water production. Its output reached approximately 52.68 million cubic metres, an increase of 3.4% from about 50.94 million cubic metres in the previous year. The latest data illustrates a divergence between electricity and water trends across Oman through August 2026. While electricity generation increased at both total and net levels, water production overall declined despite Dhofar’s growth. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classifies these figures as preliminary.
