Standards Define Approved Plug-in Solar Devices
These legal updates revise existing safety regulations for plugs, sockets, and electrical systems. The statutory instrument was received by Parliament on July 17, just one day after ministers approved it. The regulation provides a limited exception for certain generators that utilize standard household connections. A notified body must verify that each plug complies with the relevant BS 1363 standards. While the safety amendments apply to England, Wales, and Scotland, the product approval rules extend across the entire UK market.
The interim standard outlines requirements for electrical design, mounting, fire safety, labelling, and user instructions. It also includes provisions for safe disconnection and limits on electricity exported into household circuits. A technical study tested typical systems on domestic wiring under controlled conditions; all operated safely during testing, with no evidence of sustained unsafe energisation. The study also identified differences in product quality, such as export controls and electromagnetic compatibility, which informed the final specifications.
Consultation Results Shape Retail Implementation Plans
The government received 466 responses during its public consultation on plug-in solar. Over 85% of respondents supported the interim specification, with many also endorsing the plug-in amendment. Participants included installers, manufacturers, network operators, technical experts, and the general public. Some expressed concerns regarding older wiring and the sale of products without proper approval, while others called for clearer guidance to prevent confusion between plug-in solar panels and plug-in battery systems, which remain outside this new framework.
Preparations for retail launch are progressing ahead of the August deadline, with leading sellers engaging in discussions about compliant products. The new rules target small-scale systems suitable for balconies, gardens, and other outdoor areas. They do not apply to plug-in batteries or devices that store electricity imported from household circuits. Systems using the new connection method cannot operate legally before August 27. After that date, only approved products within the 800-watt limit will be permitted to connect through a standard household socket.
