This figure marks the highest mortality rate since systematic tracking began in 2016. Weekly surveillance data shows that an estimated 9,800 deaths were associated with sustained high temperatures from early April until July 19. The Federal Ministry of Health’s public health authority stated that the total death toll for this year already exceeds the annual figures recorded during any single year over the past decade.

    The escalation in death numbers was primarily driven by a severe nationwide heatwave in the latter half of June, when temperatures repeatedly neared 40 degrees Celsius across several federal states. Epidemiological models used by public health experts indicate that more than 5,000 of these fatalities can be directly linked to this extreme weather event. Data shows an estimated 810 heat-related deaths from early April to June 21, followed by a spike of 4,310 deaths from June 22 to June 28. The German Weather Service confirmed that on June 27, 46 weather stations recorded temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.

    Throughout July, mortality figures remained high as prolonged heat affected large parts of central and western Europe. The Robert Koch Institute’s epidemiological estimates reveal that 7,900 heat-related deaths occurred between early April and July 12. A further 1,900 deaths were recorded during the surveillance week from July 13 to July 19, bringing the total to 9,800. When compared to previous years, this total exceeds the record of approximately 8,900 heat-related deaths set in 2018. The numbers for 2026 also represent a significant rise above the average of around 2,900 heat-related fatalities documented annually from 2023 to 2025.

    Data compiled by federal health analysts shows that older adults bore the brunt of the heat’s health impacts. Of the nearly 9,800 total deaths, about 7,880 occurred among individuals aged 75 and above, forming the majority of cases. Further age-specific data indicates approximately 2,950 deaths among those 85 and older, around 1,320 among 75 to 84-year-olds, roughly 550 among 65 to 74-year-olds, and about 300 among residents under 65. The report also notes a higher mortality rate among women compared to men, largely due to demographic factors.

    Medical experts from the institute emphasized that heat rarely appears as the sole direct cause on death certificates. Instead, prolonged exposure to high ambient temperatures worsens pre-existing health conditions, significantly raising the risk of fatal cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, and metabolic complications. Epidemiologists rely on mortality models that combine death registration data from the Federal Statistical Office with daily weather records to estimate excess deaths due to thermal stress. The agency highlighted that elevated nighttime temperatures impede physical cooling, placing those with vulnerable health at increased risk.

    Older Adults Particularly Susceptible to Heat-Related Risks

    Forecasts from Germany’s meteorological services suggest that high-temperature conditions are likely to continue across large parts of the country through the remainder of summer. Daily maximum temperatures are expected to stay between 35 and 39 degrees Celsius in broad areas, with localized peaks reaching up to 40 degrees. In response, public health authorities and local health departments have issued continued heat advisories, urging care facilities, healthcare providers, and families to closely monitor elderly residents, ensure adequate indoor cooling, and promote sufficient hydration during the hottest parts of the day.

    This comprehensive data release emphasizes the growing challenge for public health systems faced with recurring extreme weather events across Europe. As emergency heat response plans are adjusted, the German health system and municipal authorities are under increased pressure to address these climate-related health threats. As surveillance continues through the end of summer, the documentation of nearly 10,000 heat-related fatalities provides vital baseline data for healthcare planners, environmental agencies, and emergency responders. Officials anticipate that heat monitoring will remain active through September, with governments evaluating structural measures and urban cooling initiatives aimed at protecting vulnerable populations from future heat-related health risks.
