DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The World Health Organization states that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo could be contained within three months if sufficient resources are mobilized. As of August 16, official data indicates 5,021 confirmed cases and 2,378 fatalities. The outbreak has spread across six provinces and 55 health zones, with a case fatality rate of approximately 47%. This marks it as the deadliest Ebola outbreak ever recorded in the country.

Thierno Baldé, WHO incident manager, emphasized that the timeline for containment depends on maintaining adequate staffing, supplies, and operational support. The current response has received roughly $69.3 million of the $115 million needed. During a two-week span, health teams added over 400 treatment beds and deployed an additional 100 epidemiologists along with more than 500 community health workers. These workers assist with surveillance, contact tracing, case identification, and referrals. The response effort also relies on ambulances, vehicles, medical supplies, and trained personnel across affected zones.

Transmission has now reached Bas-Uélé, making it the sixth province impacted by the outbreak. Although Ituri remained the primary transmission hub in mid-August, accounting for most confirmed cases and fatalities, officials noted many recent infections had no known link to existing patients. This gap underscores the need for faster case detection and contact monitoring. Efforts have expanded surveillance to identify infections early and facilitate swift patient transfer to treatment centers.

Response efforts widen across affected regions

The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare announced the outbreak on May 15. Laboratory results confirmed Bundibugyo virus, one of the strains responsible for Ebola disease. Since the virus was first identified in 1976, the country has experienced 17 Ebola outbreaks. Additionally, health authorities in Uganda have reported cases linked to this broader outbreak, with 20 confirmed infections and two deaths. No new cases have been reported there after June 21.

Currently, there is no licensed vaccine or specific approved treatment for Bundibugyo virus disease. As a result, medical care focuses on early detection, supportive therapy, infection prevention, and rapid contact tracing. Health teams also carry out safe burials and community outreach activities to curb further transmission. Local personnel play a key role in identifying suspected cases and guiding patients to treatment centers. The authorities have provided hygiene supplies and trained staff in affected areas. Early supportive care continues to be vital for individuals exhibiting Ebola symptoms.

Enhanced surveillance and funding remain vital for containment

Contact monitoring improved during August but still lagged behind public health targets in some regions. By August 12, response teams were tracking 17,460 of the 20,740 contacts listed, approximately 84%. Additional epidemiologists have joined efforts to enhance detection and reduce delays between symptom onset and treatment. Community health workers report suspected infections and connect patients with healthcare facilities. Medical personnel have faced significant risks, with over 150 infections among healthcare workers recorded by early August.

The outbreak was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 17. Both national authorities and international health organizations continue to conduct laboratory testing, provide clinical care, enhance surveillance, carry out safe burials, and engage communities. The latest weekly updates show hundreds of additional confirmed cases and deaths compared to previous reports. Baldé noted that the three-month containment goal hinges on securing the necessary resources to sustain these efforts. Response teams also persist in working in areas affected by insecurity and disruptions to medical services.
