Over 5,000 Cases Reported in Congo Ebola Crisis as Response Efforts Accelerate

    August 19, 2026

The World Health Organization states that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo could be contained within three months if sufficient resources are mobilized. As of August 16, official data indicates 5,021 confirmed cases and 2,378 fatalities. The outbreak has spread across six provinces and 55 health zones, with a case fatality rate of approximately 47%. This marks it as the deadliest Ebola outbreak ever recorded in the country. WHO and Congo health teams strengthen surveillance amid the expanding Ebola outbreak. Thierno Baldé, WHO incident manager, emphasized that the timeline for containment depends on maintaining adequate staffing, supplies, and operational support. The current response has received roughly $69.3 million of the $115 million needed. During a two-week span, health teams added over 400 treatment beds and deployed an additional 100 epidemiologists along with more than 500 community health workers. These workers assist with surveillance, contact tracing, case identification, and referrals. The response effort also relies on ambulances, vehicles, medical supplies, and trained personnel across affected zones. Transmission has now reached Bas-Uélé, making it the sixth province impacted by the outbreak. Although Ituri remained the primary transmission hub in mid-August, accounting for most confirmed cases and fatalities, officials noted many recent infections had no known link to existing patients. This gap underscores the need for faster case detection and contact monitoring. Efforts have expanded surveillance to identify infections early and facilitate swift patient transfer to treatment centers. Response
