Two deaths linked to Michigan’s 2026 cyclosporiasis outbreak confirmed by health officials

MICHIGAN / RankWire.AI / – Michigan health officials have verified two fatalities associated with the state’s 2026 cyclosporiasis outbreak. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported a total of 11,234 cases as of Aug. 3. Through July 30, the state also noted 193 hospitalizations. Both individuals had serious pre-existing health issues. Authorities suggested that cyclosporiasis and dehydration might have worsened their conditions, but they did not disclose additional personal details.

Michigan reports first deaths tied to cyclospora outbreak
Health officials track 11,234 Michigan cyclospora cases and 193 hospitalizations.

The two individuals experienced symptoms before the voluntary iceberg lettuce recall announced on July 17. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the deaths in an update released on Aug. 3. The CDC characterized both cases as cyclosporiasis-related deaths involving individuals with underlying health problems. Variations exist between state and federal totals due to differing reporting methods. Michigan’s figures include all cases identified during its investigation, whereas federal numbers typically focus on laboratory-confirmed infections.

Federal officials continue to probe a separate nine-state outbreak associated with iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico. By July 24, authorities identified 1,947 cases with individuals reporting exposure to Taco Bell. At least 98 patients were hospitalized. The reported illness period ranged from June 22 to July 20. The detailed federal count initially did not include Michigan’s two deaths, which officials confirmed after that update.

Recall eliminates iceberg lettuce from the marketplace

Taylor Farms de Mexico pulled iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the U.S. retail market. The recall encompassed various food-service products and certain Marketside lettuce products sold through Walmart stores. The affected retail items included iceberg salad and shredded iceberg lettuce with use-by dates from July 18 through Aug. 3. Between June 29 and July 16, Taylor Fresh Foods supplied recalled food-service lettuce across 27 states. Taco Bell ceased using the supplier’s lettuce on July 17.

Michigan has not definitively linked every reported case to the recalled lettuce. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services continues to list lettuce or salad greens as a potential source. Investigators have yet to identify a specific product, farm, or supplier connected to the entire statewide outbreak. They also have not associated the two deaths with a particular recalled item. Federal officials state that the identified lettuce cluster accounts for only part of the ongoing cyclosporiasis activity nationwide.

Cyclospora infection may persist for several weeks

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite responsible for causing an intestinal illness called cyclosporiasis. Typically, individuals become infected after consuming contaminated food or water. Common symptoms include frequent watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea, bloating, and fatigue. These symptoms generally develop about a week after exposure, though timing can vary. If left untreated, the illness may last over a month and can recur after brief periods of improvement.

Health authorities recommend consumers discard recalled iceberg lettuce or return it to the point of purchase. They also advise washing containers and surfaces that have come into contact with the product. Anyone experiencing symptoms should seek medical advice, especially if they recently ate iceberg lettuce. Older adults and individuals with underlying health conditions may face heightened risks from dehydration. Michigan health officials are continuing to update case totals as local and state investigators analyze new reports.
