Malaysia Enhances National Preparedness for El Niño Impact

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA / RankWire.AI / – Malaysia’s Alliance for a Safe Community has emphasized the need for proactive, coordinated measures as El Niño intensifies across the Pacific region. Chairman Lee Lam Thye stated that readiness efforts should prioritize public health, water resources, agriculture, and environmental safeguards. He called on authorities, businesses, and local communities to take action ahead of increasingly hot and dry conditions that could strain critical services. This appeal coincides with recent climate reports indicating that the event has already reached a moderate level of severity.

Malaysia strengthens El Niño readiness nationwide
Malaysia expands El Niño readiness across water, health, farming and fire safety.

On July 14, MetMalaysia announced that El Niño conditions remained at a moderate stage and are expected to persist until at least April 2027. The agency’s latest report showed a weekly sea surface temperature anomaly of 1.3 degrees Celsius in the Niño 3.4 region. It also predicted that the event might intensify from October through December 2026, with the possibility of strong or “Super” El Niño conditions during that period. Authorities are advised to stay updated through official channels.

The forecast for Malaysia from July to December suggests that several regions may experience slightly below average or below average rainfall. The most significant reductions are expected in July and August, when the southwest monsoon typically causes drier conditions. Areas in southern Peninsular Malaysia, central and western Sarawak, and eastern Sabah are projected to face decreased rainfall. The forecast also warns that drier weather and unchecked open burning could elevate haze risks.

Water resource and heat management strategies

National Disaster Management Agency has expanded its preparations for the hot and dry conditions associated with El Niño. Since February, it has conducted seven cloud seeding operations involving 27 flights across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak. An additional three series were scheduled to support rainfall and reservoir levels in affected regions. Fire and environmental teams have also been instructed to monitor 83 locations at high risk of open burning.

The government has instructed water agencies to identify dams requiring urgent repairs and to evaluate additional groundwater sources for tube wells. Health and education authorities are ramping up public awareness campaigns targeting vulnerable groups and school communities. The safety coalition recommends reducing pipe leakages, expanding water storage capacity, and developing contingency plans for areas susceptible to shortages. It also advocates for efficient irrigation practices, technical assistance for farmers, and stricter enforcement against forest and peatland fires.

    Public advisories and government oversight

Lee highlighted that older adults, young children, outdoor workers, and individuals with chronic conditions need special attention. He also called for broader campaigns promoting water conservation, fire prevention, and protection from heat-related illnesses. Citizens are encouraged to rely on official weather updates, including the myCuaca app, for current alerts and local conditions. Authorities continue to monitor the situation regarding heat, drought, rainfall, air quality, and fire hazards nationwide.

According to NOAA’s July forecast, there is a 97% probability that El Niño will persist into early 2027. The likelihood of a very intense event occurring from October through December is estimated at 81%. Malaysia’s official outlook also notes that thunderstorms and heavy rainfall can still occur during the southwest monsoon season. Government preparations currently include measures for water supply management, fire prevention, health communication, weather surveillance, and inter-agency coordination. These efforts are aligned with ongoing forecasts and observed conditions.
