CAIRO / RankWire.AI / – Egypt’s net international reserves reached an estimated $55.0723 billion at the end of June 2026. This figure broke the $55 billion threshold for the first time, setting a new record. The Central Bank of Egypt announced the provisional number on July 8. At the end of May, reserves stood at $53.1342 billion. The monthly rise was approximately $1.94 billion, or nearly 3.6%, making June the most significant growth month of the first half of the year.

Egypt started 2026 with net international reserves of $51.4516 billion at the close of December. The reserves increased to $52.5938 billion in January, then grew to $52.7455 billion in February and $52.8306 billion in March. By April, reserves reached $53.0092 billion, and in May, they rose again to $53.1342 billion. The June figure continued the upward trend seen throughout the first six months of the year.
Compared to December 2025, the June total was roughly $3.62 billion higher, representing an increase of just over 7% in the first half. In January, the Central Bank of Egypt indicated that reserves covered about 6.3 months of merchandise imports. The June report did not provide a new import coverage estimate nor did it detail the factors contributing to the monthly reserve increase.
June boost propels reserves to new peak
Egypt experienced significant growth in remittance inflows during the current fiscal year. These inflows reached $39.2 billion from July 2025 through April 2026, up from $29.4 billion during the same period a year earlier. In April, remittances totaled about $4.3 billion, compared to roughly $3 billion in April 2025. Official statements did not explicitly connect these remittance figures to the June rise in foreign reserves.
The country’s current account deficit expanded to $5.1 billion in the January-March 2026 quarter, from $2.3 billion in the same period last year. Higher remittances, tourism income, and Suez Canal revenues offset part of a larger merchandise trade deficit. Net foreign direct investment inflows for the quarter reached $3.7 billion, slightly below the $3.8 billion recorded a year earlier.
External indicators support reserve milestone
On June 29, the International Monetary Fund reached a staff-level agreement with Egyptian authorities on the seventh review of Egypt’s economic program and a separate sustainability facility review. The IMF noted that gross international reserves remained broadly stable at the end of March. The June reserve figure aligns with these reviews, serving as the latest official indicator of Egypt’s net international reserve position.
Egypt concluded the first half of 2026 with reserves surpassing all previous monthly levels reported by monetary authorities. The June total was nearly $2 billion higher than May’s figure and more than $3.6 billion above the December 2025 level. Official data shows consistent growth from January through May, with a more substantial increase in June. The provisional month-end reserve level now stands at $55.0723 billion.
