ATKA, ALASKA / RankWire.AI / – The Alaska Earthquake Center reported a magnitude 5.0 earthquake that took place southeast of Atka in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands late Saturday night. The event was recorded at 7:36 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time on August 8, which corresponds to 03:36 UTC on August 9. The quake’s origin was approximately 48 miles, or 77 kilometers, southeast of Atka, with seismologists estimating its depth at around 10.6 miles, or 17 kilometers.

Magnitude 5.0 earthquake shakes Alaska near Atka
Alaska’s Aleutian Islands remain a highly active region for earthquake monitoring.

The earthquake’s precise location was at 51.8286 degrees north latitude and 173.2496 degrees west longitude. It was classified at magnitude 5.0 based on the local magnitude scale. Atka is situated on Atka Island within the central Aleutian chain, a remote community hundreds of miles away from Alaska’s major urban centers. The region frequently experiences seismic activity due to multiple active geological structures extending beneath the North Pacific.

The epicenter also lies southwest of Seguam Island and Amukta Pass. Mount Sergief is located west of where the earthquake was recorded. Numerous islands and volcanic formations surround this extensive seismic zone. Notably, this event occurred at a relatively shallow depth for Aleutian earthquakes, although the region also hosts deeper seismic events within the descending Pacific Plate. Seismologists analyze parameters such as location, depth, and magnitude to differentiate these types of earthquakes.

Frequent seismic activity characterizes the Aleutian chain

The Aleutian Arc stands out as one of Alaska’s most earthquake-prone regions, driven by the Pacific Plate’s movement underneath the North American Plate along a vast boundary. This geological process, known as subduction, causes earthquakes of various depths and strengths across a broad area. The tectonic dynamics extend over thousands of kilometers through the North Pacific, leading to thousands of seismic events annually in Alaska, especially beneath or near the Aleutian Islands.

This area has also been the site of some of Alaska’s most powerful earthquakes. Notable examples include a magnitude 8.6 tremor in the Andreanof Islands in 1957 and a magnitude 8.7 event in the Rat Islands in 1965. The region has experienced significant earthquakes in 1986 and 1996 as well. All these quakes occurred along the same major plate boundary that largely shapes Alaska’s seismic activity, with their locations and depths varying throughout the system.

Monitoring networks record seismic activity across Alaska

Seismic events within the Aleutians can originate from different parts of the regional tectonic framework. Some happen along the main interface between the Pacific and North American plates, while others develop deeper inside the Pacific Plate as it sinks beneath Alaska. Shallow earthquakes can also occur within the overriding crust. The U.S. Geological Survey maintains national earthquake databases and publishes reviewed data for seismic events across Alaska and the wider United States.

The earthquake on August 8 adds to Alaska’s long record of magnitude 5.0 events. Its location southeast of Atka places it within a zone known for consistent seismic activity. The depth measurement of 17 kilometers categorizes it as a shallow earthquake by regional standards. Monitoring stations across the state continuously detect ground motion signals from remote islands and mainland communities, which scientists analyze to improve understanding of earthquake locations, magnitudes, and depths throughout Alaska.
