THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO / RankWire.AI / – Northern Ontario encountered an expanding wildfire crisis Wednesday as almost 200 fires burned throughout the region. Ontario reported 183 active wildland fires at 3 p.m. on July 15. By evening, the Northwest Fire Region had 136 fires, with 63 remaining uncontrolled. Additionally, officials recorded eight new fires during the day. Hot, dry, and windy conditions sustained an extreme fire risk across multiple northern districts.

Authorities issued evacuation orders for Armstrong, Whitesand First Nation, Gull Bay First Nation, and Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation. These orders also extended to Namaygoosisagagun First Nation and Gakijiwanong Anishinaabe Nation. The Ontario Provincial Police assisted with evacuations and managed road closures across the affected area. Residents near Ignace, Crystal Lake, and Highway 633 were advised to prepare for possible departure. Emergency services urged the public to keep evacuation routes clear and to avoid non-essential travel.

A wildfire impacted Namaygoosisagagun, a remote settlement approximately 200 kilometres north of Thunder Bay. Residents evacuated by boat, as no road connects the community to nearby towns. The Anishinabek Nation confirmed all known residents had reached safety, pending a comprehensive community assessment. The fire caused damage or destruction to homes and other structures. Namaygoosisagagun has a population of around 40 members. Local leaders continued inspecting properties and assessing damages following the evacuation.

Evacuations and Road Closures Disrupt Life in Northern Ontario

Highway 599 remains closed between Highway 516 and Mishkeegogamang First Nation. Highway 527 also remains shut between Gull Bay First Nation and Armstrong. Meanwhile, Highway 11 has reopened between Highways 633 and 623, though emergency responders are still operating nearby. Canadian National Railway halted operations near Armstrong after flames encircled a train; personnel evacuated safely. Authorities warned drivers to expect variable conditions and to adhere strictly to all closure notices.

Firefighting teams concentrated efforts on protecting communities, residences, and vital infrastructure across northwestern Ontario. Dryden 13 merged with nearby blazes in the Wabakimi region, creating the larger Thunder Bay 36 fire. Other priority areas included Quetico Provincial Park, Atikokan, Upsala, Cat Lake, and Fort Hope. Water bombers targeted active fire fronts, while ground crews established containment lines. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources mobilized available personnel and equipment to the most vulnerable zones.

Smoke Extends to Southern Ontario and US States

Wildfire smoke from northern Ontario has spread into southern parts of the province and into northeastern United States. Toronto’s Air Quality Health Index reached 10+, indicating very high pollution levels, during intense smoke on Wednesday. Environment Canada issued warnings about poor air quality and limited visibility. Health authorities recommended that children, seniors, and individuals with heart or lung conditions reduce outdoor activities. Fine particles from smoke can irritate airways and exacerbate existing health issues.

A Restricted Fire Zone was established across the Northwest Fire Region and parts of northeastern Ontario. This order prohibited open fires, including campfires, and halted existing burning permits. Ontario has recorded 453 wildland fires this year, compared to 349 at the same stage in 2025. The 10-year average for this period is 312 fires. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources urged residents to follow evacuation instructions and check official road and wildfire updates before traveling.
